Education Programs for Youth and Adults

Conservation Education Comes Alive!

These programs are appropriate for students preK-12 and can be adapted for workplaces and adult organizations.

Thank you to ConocoPhillips Alaska for generously sponsoring educational programs at Title 1 Schools! With this funding, we are pleased to offer 40 programs* at no cost to the students at Title 1 Schools. 

*Applies to the program fee of $225 (schools can schedule multiple $225 programs). All other costs, such as travel reimbursement or owl pellets, are the responsibility of the school.

  • All programs include an Ambassador Bird. Pricing for programs without an Ambassador Bird can be requested in the Program Request form.

    In-person programs are 45 minutes to one hour in length. All programs can be adapted for any age group, from youth to adults.

    IN-PERSON PROGRAMS

    Avian Adaptations
    $225

    In this interactive program, students will learn about the remarkable adaptations birds have developed to help them survive in diverse environments.

    Bird Brains: A Look at Avian Intelligence
    $225

    Corvids, the family of birds that include ravens, crows, magpies, and jays are some of the most intelligent of bird species. They exhibit a wide range of behaviors, including problem-solving, extensive communication, and the ability to plan for the future. Students will be able to observe some of these astounding behaviors firsthand with a visit from Girdie the Crow.

    Birds in Indigenous Cultures
    $225

    Listen to traditional stories from Alaska's Indigenous cultures that incorporate bird behavior to teach about the natural world and how to treat others, humans and animals, with respect and kindness.

    Careers with Animals
    $225

    From zookeeper to animal trainer, this class will introduce students to many exciting careers with animals. Hands-on activities include preparing diets for birds of prey (warning: this is not for the squeamish!). Students can also make enrichment items that will be given to Bird TLC Ambassador Birds (instructions for making these items will be left with the teacher).

    WALK-BY PROGRAMS
    $225/hour

    A fun and open-ended informal presentation designed for larger scale events where the audience is free to move about the space.

    VIRTUAL PROGRAMS
    $75 for a 30-minute program

    These engaging virtual programs bring our educators into your classroom, no matter where you are located. Students will have a chance to meet one of our animal ambassadors, participate in an educational lesson and ask questions. 

    Choose from any of the options below, and we can design the perfect fit for your needs.

  • Venue

    • Ideal venues have good acoustics, little echo (classrooms, libraries, conference rooms). Gyms and auditoriums are not recommended.

    • A solid wall behind the presentation space (this helps the bird feel safe)

    • A nearby parking space for ease of loading/unloading

    • No other animals present (especially dogs)

    Cancellation - Programs must be cancelled 48 hours in advance to avoid being charged the minimum fee.

    Pricing - Prices are based on a typical class of 25 students. There will be a charge of $5 for each additional student, up to 35 students. If a class exceeds 35 students, then 2 programs must be booked. All fees must be paid in full before the scheduled date of program.

    Programs are designed to be very interactive so smaller group sizes are suggested.

    A travel fee of $50 applies to programs in Eagle River/Chugiak and Girdwood. A travel fee of $75 applies to programs in Palmer/Wasilla. Travel outside of this range will be determined when booking a program.

    BirdTLC provides owl pellet products that are heat sterilized and easy to use for students of all ages. Excellent for hands-on, inquiry-based learning.

    *Price includes pellet only, does not include dissection kit. Subject to Availability.
